A fast-growing town with newer wiring
The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate (PEP) puts Belgrade at 13,107 people, up 22.6% from 2020. No other town this site covers grew that fast.
The housing shows it. In the American Community Survey (ACS 2020–24 5-year), the median Belgrade home was built in 2002, and 16.1% of homes were built in 2020 or later. About 43.9% of occupied homes are rented, so many calls come from landlords and tenants as well as owners.
Newer wiring rarely means knob-and-tube or fuse boxes. It does mean builder-grade panels that run short of space once a household adds a charger, a hot tub or a heated garage.
Colder nights than town
Belgrade sits next to the valley's long-record airport weather station.
The Bozeman airport station at Belgrade averages about 24 nights a year at or below 0°F (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), compared with about 13.5 at the MSU station in Bozeman. On January 13, 2024 the airport station hit -45°F, during the same cold snap that pushed NorthWestern Energy to a record peak load.
Cold like that shows up in electrical calls:
- Tripping garage circuits. Block heaters, heat lamps and space heaters on one 15 A or 20 A circuit. Start with urgent electrical problems if a breaker won't reset.
- EV range and charging in the cold. A Level 2 charger usually needs its own 240 V circuit, often 40–60 A. See EV charger installation.
- Panel capacity for heat pumps. Adding a heat pump with backup heat strips can push a 100 A or crowded 200 A panel. See panel upgrades.
Belgrade permits: city, not state
Belgrade is one of three places in the valley certified to run its own electrical program. Inside city limits, the City of Belgrade Building Department issues electrical permits and inspects the work. The DLI certified-city list (updated October 7, 2026) gives 406-388-3560 for the building official. A city FAQ shows a slightly different number, so confirm it when you call.
Outside city limits the rule changes. Plenty of homes with a Belgrade mailing address sit in unincorporated Gallatin County, and there the Montana Department of Labor & Industry issues the permit. The state form asks "Is job located within city limits?" for exactly this reason. City permit fees are set by the city; ask the contractor or the city building division. For state jobs, see the Bozeman electrician cost guide for the published state fees.
Before you hire
Montana requires electricians and electrical contractors to be licensed by the State Electrical Board (MCA Title 37, ch. 68). Look up any contractor or electrician by name or license number in the Montana DLI license lookup, and ask to see the license; electricians must carry it on the job.
- Ask for a certificate of liability insurance. The board requires workers' comp and unemployment coverage, or an exemption, not a set liability amount.
- Get a written, itemized quote, and ask about trip or diagnostic fees and after-hours rates.
- Landlords: rental work must be done by licensed contractors. Tenants should report problems to the landlord in writing. This is not legal advice.

Belgrade electrical FAQ
Who issues electrical permits in Belgrade?
Inside Belgrade city limits, the City of Belgrade issues electrical permits and does the inspections. The DLI certified-city list gives the building official's number as 406-388-3560. A Belgrade mailing address outside city limits falls under the Montana Department of Labor & Industry instead, so check before work starts.
My Belgrade house is only a few years old. Why would breakers trip?
Newer homes still fill up. A garage freezer, block heater, space heater and EV charger can overload a circuit sized for ordinary use, and a cold snap stacks those loads at once. A licensed electrician can trace the circuit and run a load calculation before you add anything else.
Do I need to call NorthWestern before adding an EV charger?
NorthWestern asks customers adding an EV charger to use its Construction Application. If the job needs a bigger service, the utility handles its side and may bill for it separately. Ask each contractor whether the quote includes any NorthWestern charge or leaves it out.
