Common outlet and switch problems

Repair first

  • Outlets dead in a row: check for a tripped GFCI upstream, then the panel.
  • Warm, buzzing or scorched outlets or cover plates: stop using them and leave the breaker off.
  • Plugs that fall out of worn outlets.
  • Switches that spark, crackle or feel hot.

Upgrades

  • GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outside and in unfinished basements.
  • Replacing ungrounded two-prong outlets.
  • New outdoor outlets for block heaters, heat tape or holiday lights.
  • New 240 V outlets for a dryer, range, welder or EV charger; USB and smart switches.

A warm outlet or burning smell is not an upgrade job. See emergency electrician for what to do right now.

GFCI outlets and Montana's amendments

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) cuts power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, such as through water or a person. The NEC calls for GFCI protection in places such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors and unfinished basements. Montana amended the code in a few ways that matter at home: kitchen refrigerators and freezers do not require GFCI protection, outdoor outlets for septic alarm and well circuits are excluded, and listed HVAC equipment, like a heat-pump outdoor unit, is excepted. Montana also extended AFCI protection to unfinished basements. Montana adopted the 2023 NEC statewide effective September 26, 2026; certified cities enforce their adopted codes, so the contractor follows whichever applies.

One GFCI outlet can protect the outlets downstream of it. That is why a single tripped GFCI in a garage can leave a bathroom or outdoor outlet dead. Press reset on every GFCI you can find before you call.

Outdoor outlets, block heaters and heat tape

Bozeman's MSU weather station averages about 13.5 nights a year at or below 0°F, and the airport station near Belgrade about 24 (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). That means outdoor outlets get real use for engine block heaters, roof heat cable and heat tape on pipes. Outdoor outlets need GFCI protection and in-use (bubble) covers that close with a cord plugged in.

Heat cable and heat tape circuits are generally required to have ground-fault protection. A heat-tape outlet that keeps tripping may mean damaged cable; unplug it and have it checked. A permanent outlet near where you park beats a long extension cord across the driveway. NorthWestern lists a $150 rebate for permanently mounted engine block heater controls (no timers or portable models); check current terms. Two-prong outlets in older homes

Two-prong outlets usually mean an ungrounded circuit, common in older homes in Bon Ton, Cooper Park and North Tracy. A three-prong outlet on that circuit with no ground behind it is not a fix. Electricians typically offer three options: run a ground wire to the outlet, rewire the circuit, or add GFCI protection to the ungrounded circuit and label the outlets, which the code allows in many cases but does not provide an equipment ground. If many rooms are two-prong, ask whether a partial rewire makes more sense.

Renters and landlords

About 55.3% of Bozeman homes are renter-occupied (ACS 2020–24 5-year), and dead or warm outlets are a common rental complaint. Tenants should report the problem to the landlord in writing. Landlords must use licensed contractors for electrical work on rental property.

What the work typically involves

  1. Test

The electrician tests the circuit, finds upstream GFCIs and checks grounding.

  2. Quote

Price per outlet or GFCI, any new wire or circuit, cover types and permit.

  3. Replace or add

Power is off at the breaker; outlets, GFCIs and covers go in.

  4. Verify

Every outlet is tested and GFCIs are tripped and reset to confirm protection.

What outlet and GFCI work costs

Several outlets in one visit usually cost less each than separate trips. A new circuit or a long outdoor run costs more. More jobs are in the Bozeman electrician cost guide.

Montana rules in plain terms

Montana requires electricians and electrical contractors to be licensed by the State Electrical Board (MCA Title 37, ch. 68). Look up any contractor or electrician by name or license number in the Montana DLI license lookup, and ask to see the license; electricians must carry it on the job. The board requires workers' comp and UI coverage (or an exemption), not a set liability amount, so ask for a certificate of liability insurance.

Bozeman, Belgrade and Manhattan issue electrical permits inside city limits; everywhere else in the valley, including Livingston, Three Forks, Big Sky and Four Corners, permits come from the Montana Department of Labor & Industry (DLI Building Codes). NorthWestern won't energize new or changed wiring without a permit.

Montana's homeowner exemption (MCA 37-68-103(3)) covers your own property maintained for your own use, done personally, with a permit and inspection; not rentals, tenants or grid-tied generators. Renters: report problems to the landlord in writing; landlords must use licensed contractors for rental work. Not legal advice.

Questions to ask before you hire

Ask each contractor, and get the answers in writing:

  • Your business name and Montana license number? (Check it in the DLI lookup.)
  • Can you send a certificate of liability insurance?
  • Will the quote be written and itemized: parts, labor, permit?
  • Is there a trip or diagnostic fee, and does it come off the repair?
  • What is your after-hours or weekend rate?
  • Who pulls the permit, and is it a city or state permit?
  • Is any NorthWestern service work needed, and are its charges in your quote?
  • Which outlets will get GFCI protection, and which are on a GFCI breaker instead?

Do not pay in full before the work is done.

Frequently asked questions

Why did several outlets stop working at once?

Often a GFCI outlet upstream has tripped. Check for a GFCI with a reset button in the garage, bathrooms, kitchen, basement or outside, and press reset. Then check the panel for a tripped breaker. If the outlets stay dead, or one feels warm or smells, leave the circuit off and have an electrician trace it.

Can I replace two-prong outlets with three-prong outlets?

Not by just swapping the outlet. A three-prong outlet needs a ground behind it. Options include running a ground, rewiring the circuit, or installing GFCI protection on the ungrounded circuit and labeling it, which is allowed in many cases but is not the same as a ground. Ask an electrician which fits your home.

Does my roof heat tape need GFCI protection?

Heat cable and heat tape circuits are generally required to have ground-fault protection, either GFCI or equipment ground-fault protection at the breaker. If a heat-tape outlet keeps tripping, the cable may be damaged. Unplug it and have the cable and circuit checked rather than bypassing the protection. See the heat tape guide.

How much does a GFCI outlet cost to install?

Angi's 2026 guide puts a GFCI outlet at about $130–$300, averaging about $210. Several outlets in one visit usually cost less each. A new outdoor outlet or new circuit costs more. These are national estimates, not quotes; ask for a written, itemized price that includes any permit.
